24×48″ Student Canvases by Paintwell offer the creator excellent value. It is available in a standard 38 mm profile and a thin 18 mm. There are 32 sizes in the Paintwell range.

Paintwell student canvases are made of 100% cotton duck, and the fabric is 10 ounces in weight. The cotton is coated with three layers of titanium white acrylic gesso that is acid-free and non-yellowing. This creates a firm barrier between the material and the media used for the artwork. 

You can use any media on a Paintwell canvas: acrylic, gouache, oil watercolour and mixed media. The canvases are excellent for experimenting on and learning something new. They are great for kids, and once painted, they can be updated quickly and reworked by simply applying another coat of gesso to start again.

The 38 mm profile lends itself to a more professional look than the 18 mm. If you can work it into your budget, the thicker frame in terms of professionality is the way to go. 

A small bag of four wooden wedges is attached to the back of the canvas. These are to be inserted once the artwork is complete. They will give the frame and canvas material a much sturdier feel.

Framing your Paintwell 24×48″ Student Canvases

Student canvases can be framed in a box frame or float framed, or you can unpick the canvas off the pine timber frame altogether and glue it onto a piece of Masonite or MDF board to frame it behind glass with an ornate frame.  

If you would like to frame your 38 mm frame as is, you can easily do that too. Screw some D-rings into the back of the pine. Thread through some soft nylon cord, and it is ready to hang. Paintwell canvases are reasonably lightweight, which makes them easy to hang. The sides of the frames are also staple-free, which is excellent, particularly if you like to work your artwork around the edges of the stretched canvas. Your artwork can appear seamless on all sides of viewing, which makes your art pop from the wall. 

Tip

If you like to work wet on wet or with resin, it is recommended that you stick with the smaller-sized canvases in the Paintwelll range. Because of the nature of these canvases, they can tend to warp when you get into larger sizes. From our experience, your painting may dry and present itself very well. Still, over time the cotton canvas contracts and expands with the moisture in the air and the timber can not handle the continuous contortions. If you would like to use one of these canvases and any of these techniques, we recommend you use a size smaller than one meter by a meter or 30 x 30 inches.
