Paintwell Canvases Thin or Thick Frame?

A cheap blank canvas for painting; Paint your masterpiece: How cheap blank canvases can inspire creativity.

Love to paint and create? Art Materials Australia has all types of canvases just for that. If you are an artist or educator who requires bulk canvases, you will be pleased to know that we stock all our brands in convenient box lots. This not only ensures you have plenty of canvases on hand but also allows for easy storage and transport. Additionally, purchasing in bulk often leads to cost savings, making it a practical choice for both professionals and educators alike.

One of our most popular brands is Paintwell, mainly due to its price point. The Paintwell canvas range is available in two profiles: 18 mm – 1.8 cm and 38 mm – 3.8 cm thick.

Details About the Canvas Fabric on Paintwell Canvases

If you have been sourcing a cheap blank canvas for painting, this brand is it. Both canvas profiles have been made out of the same materials. The cotton stretched over the pine frame is 100% unbleached 10 oz cotton duck. It is acid-free, non-yellowing and triple-primed with titanium white gesso. Even though Paintwell canvases are budget-friendly, they provide an excellent surface to paint with acrylic and oil. They are also ideal for collage and mixed media art.

About the Pine Frames

Because Paintwell canvases are cheap blank canvases for painting, the timber used for the pine bracing is lightweight, which has advantages. More canvases can fit in a box and are easier to hang on a wall if you are doing a group exhibition. You can lift them easier than a premium canvas.

Quality velcro dots and removable hooks will hold most sizes in this canvas range.

Each profile has the exact canvas sizes in their ranges. Quantities vary per box as you can get more 18 mm (thin framed canvases) in a box rather than the standard 38 mm.

Educators generally prefer the 18 mm profile canvases as they are more economical. Yet they will give a beginner or a student the experience and feeling of working on a professional artist-grade canvas.

Framing your Cheap Blank Canvas for Painting

You can frame both Paintwell canvas sizes ornately. Floating frames work well and make the canvases look polished. Doing this will firm up the structure of the frame and make the artwork look like a finished piece. If you were to frame one of these canvases, it would be hard to tell that it is a budget brand. On closer expectation, only a professional artist or framer could tell.

However, we recommend not working wet-on-wet or with resin on the larger sizes of these canvases, as they will warp. The fabric and timber used in the bracing and framing of this canvas brand are not strong enough to hold the moisture and shrinkage that can come from these techniques.

Paintwell will give you the feel and look of an artist’s canvas, but on closer inspection, you might also notice that only some frames are square. Unfortunately, this is the nature of the product. If you want a step up, the Titian or Warhol’s Wife canvases are worth looking at.

What Can I do with a Budget Brand Canvas?

Paintwells may be a cheap blank canvas for painting on aimed at beginners and students but treat them the same as an artist’s canvas. You can use the same painterly techniques for your acrylic, oils and even watercolour.

If you are a beginner painter, here are three types of paintbrushes you can use on your Paintwell canvases.

  • Nylon
  • Synthetic
  • Taklon

These paintbrushes are ideal for painting on a cheap blank canvas. They provide a smooth application and work well with both acrylics and oils. They are perfect for beginners to practice different techniques and build confidence on an affordable canvas.

You can use water-based and solvent-based paints. If you want to blend on your canvas surface, nylon, Synthetic, and Taklon paintbrushes are ideal. They have feathery, soft bristles that will glide across your Paintwell surface.

  • Acrylic – water-based
  • Gouache – water-based
  • Oil – solvent-based
  • Watercolours – water-based

Use a Hog Bristle Paintbrush

Using a Hog bristle paintbrush is ideal if you want to see brush hair lines in your painting, also known as brush retention marks. These brushes have stiff bristles and do not flow like synthetic hair. Add an impasto medium to your acrylic or oil-based paints and create great textures with Hog hair paintbrushes.

Impasto is a technique used in painting, where paint is laid on an area of the surface thickly, usually thick enough that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible. You Paint can also be mixed right on the canvas. When dry, impasto provides texture; the paint appears to be coming out of the canvas.” cited Wikipedia.

  • Water-based impasto
  • Solvent-based impasto

Use a Colour Shaper or Palette Knife

CIn addition to traditional brushes, colour shapers and palette knives can also be effectively used on a cheap blank canvas for painting with both acrylics and oils. Even though Paintwell is considered a budget brand, it still provides the flexibility to layer mediums gradually, allowing them to become thick and rich. This makes it a great option for artists looking to build texture and depth without breaking the bank.

Mixed Media on a Cheap Blank Canvas for Painting?

Paintwells are not only a cheap blank canvas for painting, but they also work beautifully for decoupage and inspirational journal-style artwork. In addition, you can easily build many layers on top of these canvases, creating complex textures. Materials such as charcoal, glue, markers, oil, and soft pastels can all be applied smoothly to the surface. Furthermore, we recommend applying a layer of water- or solvent-based varnish on top, as this will help preserve your masterpiece for years to come.
