Materials Needed:

  • Soy wax
  • Jars, tea lights or clam shells
  • Fragrance
  • Wick
  • Stick-ums
  • Thermometer
  • Small wax pot (preferably with lip for easy pouring)
  • Large pot
  • Colourants (if desired)
  • Warning label (recommended if selling or giving candles as gifts

Step-by-Step process to Candle Making

1. Choose a jar and measure wax to suit by pouring in water to see how many millilitres it holds.

           e.g.: 45ml water = 45gm wax and 4.5ml of fragrance (10% rule).

           e.g if making 4x 250gm candles – 4 x 250gm wax – therefore 1kg wax total required and 100ml of fragrance.

2. Measure the widest diameter of the jar to get the wick size. This measurement is critical. Check the wick chart to make sure you get the best fit.

3. Secure the correct wick to the base of the container with a stickum.

4. Fill the large pot with approximately one inch of water and heat to 60-70 degrees Celsius.

5. Melt the wax by placing the wax into the Freaky Froda pouring pot. Place it inside the large pot. If there is no trivet, you can use an egg ring or a cookie cutter to break up the contact between the two pots.

6. Colourants can be added at any time. Start by adding a small amount and slowly increase until you get the desired colour.

7. Stir wax often. The wax will fully melt at around 60 degrees. Keep the temperature from going above 70 degrees, as the wax will burn.

8. When the wax is 60 degrees Celsius and fully melted, pour in the fragrance and stir well.

9. Pour the wax into prepared jars or pots.

10. Stabilise the wick with icy pole sticks or clips, anything that will centre it.

11. Allow the wax to set.

12. Trim the wick when completely set.

13. Place a warning label on the base of your candle jar.

Candle Making Short Process

  • Boil the wax to the correct temperature of 60-70 degrees Celsius
  • Prepare the jar with an appropriate wick
  • Weigh the correct quantity of wax on the scales
  • Melt wax
  • Add colour (optional)
  • Add fragrance at 60 degrees
  • Stir completely
  •   Pour the wax into the prepared jar
  • Wait to set
  • Add the caution sticker to your candle base
  • Enjoy.

Tips and Troubleshooting:

  • Frosting – This can happen when pouring the candle into cold jars.

Hot tip – warm jars before pouring into them to reduce frosting. You can use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat the jars before you pour the wax in.

  • Sinkholes – Caused by pouring wax that is too hot. Pouring slowly into containers/glass at room temperature reduces bubbles and holes.
  • The shorter your wick is, the neater the flame.
  • Oil Seeping out of Wax – Too much fragrance has been added, and the wax has not been able to hold it. Soy Wax has a fragrance load of 6-10% only.
  • Wick doesn’t stay lit – the wick is either too small or clogged with fragrance or dye.
  • Wick Smoking – Can be caused by being too draughty, the wick may be too big, or you have used too much fragrance.
  • Uneven top – If you have an irregular top on the candle, you can rectify it by using a hair dryer or heat gun to melt and smooth the top once it is set.
  • Clean your pour pot as soon as you have finished by gently wiping it with a paper towel.
  • What colour is your colourant? Draw a line with it on a piece of paper for the best indication of the true colour.
