Description

Beginner and student Paintwell canvases

20×24″ Beginner canvases are of lesser quality than artist canvases, which have a purpose for many reasons.

They are economical and can be purchased in bulk, making them great for community events, school environments and group activities.

Paintwell canvases are a light 10 oz weight but are still made from 100% cotton; this makes them perfect for a beginner, intermediate or student creator. We have sold the Paintwell canvas brand for decades and have known a lot of professional artists who have bought them. Even though they are a budget-friendly canvas, they offer incredible value.

If you are starting and want to spend less on a surface, then the Paintwell brand is excellent for acrylics, gouache, oils and watercolour paints. You can even prime them with a Colourfix primer, and they will easily hold dry media such as charcoal and pastel.

What materials make 20×24″ beginner canvases?

Paintwell canvases are ready to go once unwrapped, as they are already triple-primed with acid-free titanium white gesso. They feature a medium texture so the creator will have the experience and feel that they are working on a genuine artist’s canvas. Children will not even notice they are working on beginner canvases.

The canvas fabric is stretched over kiln-dried stretcher bars. Each canvas has four corner braces in a small bag. These are to tighten the frame once it has been worked on to get the best tension.

Paintwell canvases are available in both ¾”(18 mm) and 1 ½” (38 mm) profiles. The 18mm frame is popular among primary school teachers and community art shows, as you will get more with your budget than the thicker 38 mm frames.

Paintwell canvases feature a staple-free edge. Staples are placed at the back of the canvas, which makes them easy to display. You can hang them on the wall with D hooks and nylon string. Decorative frames can be placed around 18 mm canvases and hung too.

Tip

Wet on wet: Paintwell canvases are not suitable for painting wet on wet, especially if you plan to saturate the canvas thoroughly. The pine frame used to hold the canvas is lightweight and does tend to warp. Especially if you work on a large frame, anything over a meter square.

Resin: The same, unfortunately, goes for resin. If you keep your work small, you will have no problems with the frame and the canvas, but if you try and use a larger size, it will wrap. You might not notice it for some time, but eventually, the timber cannot contract and expand with the fabric and resin. We recommend using a Warhol’s Wife canvas for resin work, as the bracing is much sturdier.

These beginner canvases are made for learning, crafting, and painting for fun. Because of this, they are not gallery quality, and squareness and warping may occur.

Tip

A professional framer can square up your canvas with extra bracing if you create a masterpiece. However, most likely not if you have used resin.

You can unpick the staples at the back of the stretched canvas and have it restretched on a new heavy-duty frame. You could also frame it traditionally on a piece of board, masonite or MDF and place it behind glass with an ornate frame.
