Hot tip

When you see a fan brush for the first time, it is instantly recognisable. The brush head looks like a handheld paper fan. It has a flat brush head, and the hairs are spread in a semi-circle. 

The metal ferrule holds the hairs firmly in this shape. When wet, the hairs stay spread out and do not form a point. You can use Hog bristle fan paintbrushes on any surface: canvas, paper and timber panels. Each substrate will give you a different feel and look. 

Hog bristle hair is firm and stiff. The more hand pressure you apply with the paintbrush, the more paint you lay on the surface of your art, and you will notice your paint strokes become blobby. The less hand pressure you use you will achieve effortlessly fluid organic lines. Try and mix up your hand pressure while painting and spend some time doing this. Eventually, you will hone in on what works for you.
