Can I stretch a rolled-up canvas that already has paint on it?

At Art Materials Australia, we have been stretching canvases for years, custom-made artist frames and paintings purchased overseas and rolled up for transport. From our experience, you can only successfully pull fabric using canvas pliers. 

Are you plotting for your next masterpiece? Remember the stretch of your canvas – it is more than just a blank space!

• Choose your dimensions, working with a particular size or unusual aspect ratio.

• Choose your canvas depth and thickness – how far would you like it to project from the wall?

• Work out the quality of your stretcher bar: Pine, Museum wood or Museo Alu-Pro wood. You may choose to use aluminium.

• Think about adding a centre bar or cross bars for extra strength in the frame. We recommend doing this, particularly with any size over one meter. 

• Choose your canvas type: cotton, jute or linen.

• Choose the weight of your fabric in grams per square metre – gsm, or ounces per yard – oz.

• Would you like your fabric primed or unprimed?

• Think about the orientation of your canvas. Do you plan to use it horizontally (landscape) or vertically (portrait)? This will affect how you fold your fabric corners.

• Lastly, how will you prime your finished frame? Will you leave it un-primed, use a universal primer, oil primer or a glue size? Will you use a titanium white primer, transparent gesso or a coloured one?

Hot tip

• Watercolourists can add a coat or two of an absorbent ground as a primer.
• Pastel artists can add a layer of pastel ground.
